J.P. Morgan Self-Directed Investing bonus: tiers, rules and real return

Updated October 17, 2026 · Offer data last verified 2026-10-17 · Not financial or tax advice.

Chase customers see this one everywhere. J.P. Morgan Self-Directed Investing (Chase's online brokerage) pays a cash bonus of $50 to $1,000 when you open a new account and add qualifying new money from outside JPMorganChase. According to our data, the offer runs until January 21, 2027, and it has one of the shortest holds among the brokerage bonuses we track: 90 days. Below are the tiers, the rules that trip people up, and where each tier lands on real return. Live figures come from our J.P. Morgan offer page.

The $5,000 tier has the highest return per dollar at 4.06% annualized. The top tier, $1,000 on $250,000, works out to 1.62%. That's better than the tier just below it, so if you're moving a large IRA or portfolio, getting over $250,000 is worth it. If you're in the middle bands, the return per dollar is thin. Consider sending the money above a threshold to a different offer instead, using the calculator.

How to earn the bonus

  1. Open a new Self-Directed Investing account through the offer page by January 21, 2027. Opening through the promotion page is what links you to the offer.
  2. Fund it within 45 days with qualifying new money: cash, securities transferred in-kind, or a rollover of retirement assets such as an IRA or old 401(k). J.P. Morgan sets your tier based on what has arrived by day 45.
  3. Keep the new money there until 90 days from enrollment. J.P. Morgan says market losses don't count against you.
  4. Get paid. J.P. Morgan says the bonus is added to the account within 15 days after you meet the conditions.

Eligibility and the fine print

Hold period and clawback risk

The requirement is to keep the new money until 90 days from enrollment, and the bonus is paid after that. So the main risk isn't a clawback after payment. It's simply not qualifying, or landing in a lower tier, if money leaves early. Because the bonus pays out within about 15 days of the hold ending, the whole process from opening to payout typically takes around three to four months. For how this compares with offers that hold your money for years, see holding periods and clawbacks.

Using it for an IRA or 401(k) rollover

Rollovers count as qualifying new money, so this offer pairs well with moving an old 401(k). Use a direct rollover, or a trustee-to-trustee IRA transfer, so the money never passes through your hands. Our Roth IRA transfer guide walks through the steps, and best IRA bonuses lists IRA-specific matches you can compare against.
