Best IRA bonuses and contribution matches
Updated October 16, 2026 · Offer data last verified 2026-10-16 · Not financial or tax advice.
IRA bonuses come in two flavours. A contribution match adds a percentage of the new money you put in for the year. A transfer or rollover match adds a percentage of the assets you move in from another IRA or a 401(k). Some ordinary brokerage promotions also accept IRA money. We track 3 dedicated IRA offers and 5 offers in total that mention IRAs.

How IRA matches differ from cash bonuses
An IRA match lands inside the IRA, so you can't spend it right away. The upside is that it grows tax-advantaged with the rest of the account. Firms usually describe the match as earnings in the account, not as a contribution, so it typically doesn't count toward your annual contribution limit. Confirm how your provider handles it.
Contribution matches are capped by the IRS contribution limit. A 1% to 3% match on one year's contribution is a small dollar amount: the figures shown above assume the maximum allowed contribution. Transfer and rollover matches have no such cap, which is why they can be much larger.
The catch: long holding periods
IRA matches tend to have the longest holds of any bonus type, often five years. If you move the money out or close the account early, the firm may take back the match or charge an early-transfer fee. A five-year hold is fine if you planned to leave the IRA where it is. It's a real cost if you might want to consolidate elsewhere. Our clawback guide covers what to look for.
Watch for membership requirements
Some of the higher match rates require a paid subscription tier. Subtract the subscription cost over the qualifying period from the bonus before you compare. For example, the offer notes for each provider:
- Firstrade IRA: DoC lists 3% transfers / 2% contributions; official page now only shows up to $250 transfer-fee rebate — likely changed.
- Webull IRA match: 3.5% contribution match with Premium (age 50+ limit shown); 1% transfer/rollover match with Premium. Premium is a paid subscription.
- Robinhood IRA match: 1% contribution match ($75 at 2026 limit); 3% with Robinhood Gold ($5/mo) = $225. Transfers/rollovers get 1% (e.g. $10k on $1M).
Moving an IRA without tax trouble
Use a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer (for IRAs) or a direct rollover (from a 401(k)) so the money never passes through your hands. Moving a Roth to a Roth, or a traditional IRA to a traditional IRA, is not a taxable event. Converting traditional money to Roth is taxable, and you shouldn't do it just to chase a bonus. See Roth IRA transfer bonuses for details.
FAQ
Does an IRA match count toward my contribution limit?
Brokers generally treat the match as earnings, not as your contribution, so it usually does not count. Check your provider's terms.
Is an IRA bonus taxed?
A match deposited inside an IRA generally follows the account's tax treatment, so it isn't taxed when credited. Brokers may still issue tax forms in some cases. This is general information, not tax advice.
Can I get an IRA bonus and a brokerage bonus at the same firm?
Sometimes. Some promotions count combined brokerage and IRA deposits, and others are separate offers. Read each offer's terms.
What happens if I move my IRA out early?
Many IRA offers recover the match or charge a fee if assets leave before the holding period ends, which is often several years.
